Income Tax / ITR Due Date Extension: What’s the Latest News
With the approaching date to have the submission of the Income Tax Returns (ITR) related to Financial Year 2024-25 (Assessment Year 2025-26), it has become a commonplace speculation and popularized demand to continue with its extension. The following is an overview of the situation on the ground, the problem, what has been requested and what tax payers need to beware.
Key Dates & Extensions So Far
Status Original date of due date is 8/1/2009|Extended date of due date is 11/30/2013|Applies to
ITRs filing (non-audit cases) 31 July 2025 15 September 2025 Regardless of whether the accounts of the persons mentioned in the previous two types of cases must be audited, individuals, HUFs, etc.
Tax Audit Report provided under sub section 44AB -Still 30 September 2025 (at present) on required cases.
What is Being Requested /Demanded.
Non-audit ITRs can be extended past 15 September 2025. A smaller number of tax practitioner bodies and Members of Parliament have sought another month (e.g. to end of September or early October).
The extension of Tax Audit Report / Tax Audit / Audit-related ITRs deadlines. Organisations, such as Sales Tax Bar Association, have lobbied to have the deadline on TAR extended to 15 November 2025, instead of 30 September.
Overall, several CA associations and taxpayer groups are identifying problems such as:
Frequent scan of ITR/ audit form/utilities, involves delays.
• Income tax e-portal issues, slowness of validation, upload problems etc.
• Shortened timeframes within which auditors and other professionals can finish doing audits and generating reports when ITR filing regulations are clear.
Government / CBDTon its part has said.
The final official extension was through Circular No. 06 / 2025 (27 May 2025): this adjusted ITR due date of non-audit cases to 15 September 2025 (31 July).
According to the latest news no official announcement of further extension has been made.
Those who have to have their audits completed still have a deadline date of 30 September 2025 to submit reports on tax audits.
Punishments and other things to observe.
You have until September 15 (non-audit ITRs) or later year(s) can still submit a belated filing but a late filing fee / penalty must also be paid / encrypted / authenticated.
The late fee is less in the case of those whose incomes are below some limits (e.g. less than ₹5 lakh).
Although filing ITR deadline has been changed, the time up to which any tax payable (self-assessment tax / advance tax) is paid without interest/penalty can still be earlier / not being postponed. Be careful.
What Taxpayers Should Do Now
1. Do not live in hope of an additional extension--there has yet to be any official announcement (at the middle of September 2025). Earlier filing can help to prevent glitches of portals, verification problems, and delayed refund.
2. Should someone need an audit, you have to prepare ahead in that the auditors will need time when your books are ready and that audit reports must be made before you can file the ITR.
3. Monitor the control adjustments (notifications or perhaps announcements) of the official Income Tax Department / CBDT / Govt of India- changes will come through announcements.
4. Make certain that all the documents, Form 26AS / AIS, etc. are finalized early on so you do not sting your feet over the absented or wrong data.
5. In case you anticipate hardship due to system problems or prolonged time to access utility/forms, you should retain the means of evidence (screenshots, correspondence) in the event that relief / condonation claims may become a consideration.
As of now, the timeline stands:
Non-audit ITRs: 15 September 2025
TAR/ audit required ITRs: 30 September 2025.
Although a lot of pressure and representations are being made on behalf of more time, there is yet no official confirmation on whether it will be extended further. Taxpayers and tax professionals believe in optimism but they must think that the existing deadlines can be considered as fixed.
