The legendary Assamese singer, composer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg was killed in a dreadful scuba diving accident in Singapore on the 19 th of September, 2025, at the age of 52 years.  The news itself was spreading so rapidly that fans, the press and music community were all in shock.  The Assam and especially the Northeast where he has been most happily received, have expressed their mourning which has spread the rest of India where his music has penetrated the hearts of millions.

Who Was Zubeen Garg

Full name and origins- Garg was a versatile and Assamese artist born in 1972 as Zubeen Borthakur in 1972, respectively. He was singing in a variety of languages such as Assamese, Bengali, Hindi, Nepali, etc.

Hyphenation to national prominence: Although he had been a big name in Assam since early days, the 2006 Bollywood hit, Ya Ali, in Gangster, was the one that made him a household name all over the country.

He took part in composing and acting as well as singing besides having a vast list of songs in various genres and languages. He had a cultural influence, or at least in the Northeast.

What occurred: Accident Information.

Zubeen had gone to Singapore to attend the North East India Festival, which is planned between 20-21 September.

He scuba dived on the accident day (they say on a boat tour with the local Assamese community members) and in the process, he experienced breathing problems.

He was saved and administered CPR at the scene before he was rushed to Singapore general hospital.

He was not resuscitated by medical action. He was pronounced dead in the ICU.

His corpse is being transported back to Assam.

Post-Reactions & Tributes.

The Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that he was one of the favourite sons of Assam and he felt very upset about the loss.

The leaders of India such as the Prime Minister also showed grief and honored his unmatched contribution to the Indian music.

Already, fans, other artists and cultural organisations have inundated the social media with messages commemorating his songs, his voice and his influence. The gap which has been left is generally recognized as immense especially in the Assamese music culture.

Clarifications/ What Is Known/ Unknown.

Mortality cause: The largest majority of the reports indicate respiratory distress during scuba diving which may cause cardiac complications. Other articles address the question of whether there could be some heart problems that could have led to it. However, there is yet no official detailed medical report.

Precise time: Some reports said that he was pronounced dead at around 2:30 pm IST.

Was it a licensed/arranged diving? The organisers of the festival claimed that they were not informed of the scuba diving trip before it took place. It seems to have been done among the members of the local community.

Legacy: Zubeen Garg’s Impact

Zubeen Garg was not just a playback singer. To most people of Assam and the Northeast, he was a source of cultural pride and a connective link between the regional identity and the national identity. And yet his tracks such as Ya Ali became so widespread and he still remained in touch with folk music and local arts in an extremely intense way.

Another thing that he was famous to do was his philanthropy and involvement in the community. As an example, in the COVID-19 pandemic he gave his Assam building as a care centre.

Even in his final posts he was advertising the North East India Festival where he posted inviting everyone to attend to enjoy the culture, crafts, tea, arts, and music of the Northeast.

Conclusion

The sudden demise of Zubeen Garg is a huge loss to Indian music. Although the fans are now left with a great number of questions, questions of safety, questions of medical cause, questions of what might have been different, his legacy stands strong: a singer who brought the Assam voice to national and international stages, overcoming the language and genre boundaries.

He might have died too early, but his music, his soul and his name will probably be a source of inspiration long after his death. To the writers of his biography, there is not only the tragedy of his death but there is the abundance of his life and work to celebrate and remember.
