BHUBANESWAR: Government of Odisha has recently given an order to all government-operated institutions of higher learning to out and out prohibit the sale of unhealthy/ junk food on the campuses. The project has been incorporated in the establishment of a healthy educational environment, as per the stipulations of the University Grants Commission (UGC). The boards of the school, college, and teacher training houses will now showcase the boards of Oil and Sugar in their canteens and cafeterias prominently.

The reasons why this move was undertaken are:
To promote healthy living among the students and staff.
Increasing intake of junk food which causes health complications such as obesity, diabetes and heart complications.
UGC guideline to provide healthy and safe learning facilities.
Teaching the students the nutritional value of their food using visible boards of Oil and Sugar.
This measure should have a number of beneficial effects:
It will result in informed eating habits among students, which will minimize health risks.
Pushes college cafes to offer healthier options.
Raises awareness regarding the consumption of sugars, oil and salt among the young adults.
Long term gain: the development of a health conscious culture in Odisha educational institutions.
