Introduction
A farmer was killed in the Bishra block of Sundargarh district in a tragic accident in the early morning when he was attacked by a wild elephant. The victim has been established as 56 year old Anand Prakash Khadia.
Incident Details
As per the local reports, Anand Prakash Khadia went to the village outskirts to take morning exercise. There was herd of six wild elephants at that time. He was suddenly charged by one of the elephants which badly wounded his leg.
Villagers came to the aid of his cry and tried to get the elephants off. But Anand Prakash badly wounded himself, dropped on the ground. Around 6.30 a.m. an ambulance was dispatched, but on reaching the place he was declared dead before he could be taken to the hospital.
Official Response
The officials of the Bishra Forest Department arrived at the scene to enquire about the incident. The locals have been very disgruntled with the forest department on the arguement that the elephants often get into the villages to put lives and properties in danger, yet preventive measures are hardly given.
Impact on the Community
The villagers have the fear that the more the rice crops grow, the more the elephant attacks might be experienced. They are insisting on instant safety precautions and awareness campaign by the forest officials to save human life as well as farmlands.
Preventive Measures
The authorities and villagers are encouraged to:
Install early warning mechanisms of movement of elephants.
Establish physical barriers in the areas between forests and farmlands.
Carry out sensitization programs on safety during the season of elephant.
Provide quick action of local forest teams in case of attack.
Conclusion
This tragic event underscores the necessity to take preventive measures and safety precautions in the elephant prone zones. The action between the villagers and the authorities would be joint in protecting both the farmers and the wildlife.
