The Basudevpur police said that Niharika was on leave a couple of days. During the day of the incident, she dropped her daughter to school and allegedly went shopping and went home. Subsequently, however, she did not take up phone calls.

The preliminary enquiries are that there is no indications of forced entry and as such the incident could be a case of suicide albeit the cause of death will be determined after a post-mortem report. Mental stress or personal issues are also the other potential factors under investigation by the police.

With the unfortunate demise of a young and hard working officer, the agriculture department and people living in the locality are in deep shock. Co-workers referred to Niharika as a diligent person and honest in her work.

The news has questioned the mental and stress levels of the government officials, more so those serving the government in rural and high pressure positions.

Government has been called upon by experts and social activists to:

Enhance the mental health services of field officers.

Institute frequent counseling and stress management in the government departments.

Educate on the need to seek help and open up in order to avoid such tragedies.

In case you are experiencing mental stress or the person you know is going through that, seek assistance. Conversation with friends, family or professionals would help.

The police of Bhadrak led by SDPO Bichitrananda Sethi has initiated an elaborate inquiry into the death of Niharika Dalai. The corpse has been submitted to post-mortem examination, and an investigation is going on with the Inspector-in-Charge Lopamudra Nayak in charge.

This tragic situation makes us think that mental health awareness is necessary and that there should be a support system in the workforce as soon as possible.
